Why Veterans Shouldn’t Be Punished for Fraud Committed by DBQ Companies

  2. Why Veterans Shouldn’t Be Punished for Fraud Committed by DBQ Companies

The Department of Veterans Affairs is rolling out a new automated tool that will review more than a million Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) for signs of fraud. The system is designed to flag patterns of false or made-up medical evidence and may trigger new Compensation & Pension exams for veterans whose DBQs look suspicious. [stripes.com]

The purpose—protecting the integrity of the benefits system—is valid. But the real issue isn’t veterans. The real issue is the companies’ mass-producing questionable DBQs.

Many of these DBQ operations are high-volume and use copy and paste language across large batches of claims, which is exactly the kind of pattern the VA says its tool is designed to detect. Yet the fallout from those practices falls not on the companies, but on the veterans who trusted them. [stripes.com]

This is especially concerning given that the majority of fraud investigations focus not on veterans, but on predatory third-party providers and unaccredited claim assistance companies. In fact, only a small fraction of active VA fraud cases actually target veterans themselves. [thedupreereport.com]

And while the VA has issued warnings to unaccredited businesses illegally charging veterans for claims assistance, those companies continue to cause harm long before enforcement catches up to them. [veteranlife.com]

The result? Veterans—who followed the rules and relied on professionals—are at risk of being reexamined, delayed, or unfairly scrutinized because of someone else’s shortcuts.

This is exactly why choosing the right representation matters. VA-accredited firms are held to ethical standards, know what valid evidence looks like, and stand by the veteran if the VA reviews or questions a claim.

Veterans shouldn’t be punished for the misconduct of companies that never should have been involved in the process to begin with. Proper, VA-accredited representation is your best protection.
